Obituary of Dorothy Lucille Mangano

Obituary Silver Creek, New York- Mangano, Dorothy Lucille. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. Dorothy went to her eternal rest on July, 16 2020 at the Lutheran Home in Jamestown, New York. She was predeceased by her husband Louis of 60 years, great granddaughter Jill Marie Mendola-Faraci, sister Pauline Cray, parents Helen Roll, Ora Brown and stepfather Joseph Roll. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Linda Mendola (Joseph) of North Carolina, Suzanne Burst of Rochester, New York, Jill (Peter) Conley of Lakewood, New York and Roberta Belote (Kevin) of Florida. She is also survived by grandchildren Deborah Fleming, Allison Clar, Leslie Summerson, John Conley, Todd Conley, Peter Conley II, Courtney Darr, Wendy Spinuzza, William Valentine and Patricia Valentine. She is also survived by 23 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was born on August 10, 1920 in Forestville, New York. She attended Silver Creek Schools and graduated from Hutchinson Central in Buffalo, New York. She married her husband Louis in 1940 and proudly raised four daughters in their home of 75 years in Silver Creek, New York. She and Louis owned and operated three businesses in the village of Silver creek for over 40 years. She was a dedicated activist and community leader. As a young wife and mother Dorothy was actively involved in planning the first Bicentennial Celebration for the village of Silver Creek in 1948. Dorothy’s dedication and love for her village inspired her to become an active participant on the village board for twenty years and was deputy mayor for 5 years. She was instrumental in establishing the annual Festival of Grapes. She served on the New York Village Association, Youth Leadership Committee, President of Business and Professional Women’s Club of Silver Creek. She was voted Citizen of the Year for Service Leadership at the United Way of Chautauqua County, given the Outstanding Performance Award in 1973, Public Service Award, Pioneer in Politics Recognition, President of NYS Clubs, Chamber of Commerce, 1975. In 2001 she was awarded the Horey-Becham Award for years of dedication service to Fredonia, Town of Pomfret Democratic Association. She was selected as Democrat of the Year and received the public Service Award from the village of Silver Creek in 2002. Dorothy also received a letter of recognition from Governor Patterson for 20 years of dedicated service for the residents of the Village of Silver Creek, NY. Dorothy was a volunteer at St. Columban’s on the Lake Retirement Home. She served as the first woman president of the County of Chautauqua advisory board, she was first woman in the community to receive merit awards from President Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson for United Nations Leadership. She served on the Board of Education Advisory Committee, and assumed a leadership role in obtaining funds for Lakeshore Community Hospital. She was a life-long member of the Town of Hanover Democratic Club. In 2013, Dorothy was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York. Her name was entered into the registered book along with many other Women’s Rights Activists, in New York State and throughout our country. Dorothy served as an example to women of all ages, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all loved her dearly and were extremely proud of the life she lived and the unconditional love she shared. She leaves behind a legacy of love, life-long selflessness and witnessed by her unwavering commitment to her Catholic faith and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. It was here that she garnered the strength and courage to pursue her path of service to all. Despite adversity, she drew incredible strength, fortitude, and endurance throughout her life from the love, support and dedication from family and friends whom she remained committed to all of her earthly years. Dorothy enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens and was an avid bird watcher. Her culinary talents were enjoyed by many. The family would like to thank the administration and staff at Lutheran Social Services and Saint Columban’s on the Lake for their devoted care for Dorothy. A mass will be held for the immediate family only. Interment will be at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery. The family will host a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
