Obituary
Joseph L. Castiglia, 92, a lifelong Silver Creek, NY resident passed away Monday morning December 23,2019 at the Autumn View Health Care Facility in Hamburg, NY. The family is grateful for the service and support of the facility.
He was born on August 18,1927 in Silver Creek at home, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Livecchi) Castiglia. Joe graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1945 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. At the conclusion of his military service he returned home. Joe courted and married the love of his life Margaret Smith. They wed June 7,1950 in California and were married for 56 years at the time of her passing. Margaret was severely injured in a horse back riding accident in her forties. Subsequently she was wheel chair bound. Joe became her full-time caregiver he took passionate care of her for over 25 years.
He was self-employed his entire adult life, the majority of which was spent as an independent contractor. He started J. L. Construction Co. and in the inception of the company they built homes. Joe switched over to commercial building, forming a new company, M.C.J. Construction Co. He built hospitals, libraries, factories and steel buildings all over WNY.
Joe’s memberships included Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, where he was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis for over 50 years, both in Silver Creek, Southern Tier Builder’s Assoc. for 50 + years, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Aux., he rode with the Mounted Police in the Chautauqua County Fair for a number of years, Tri-County Country Club, Shorewood Country Club for 50+ years, helped to create the longest running golf tournament between Shorewood, Lockport, Tri-County and St. Katherines Country Clubs, just ended in 2018. He was a charter member of the “Nothing Club”, they would meet between Xmas and New Years because there was nothing going on.
He also had many interests, of course he was an avid golfer, played tennis, enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling and scuba diving. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and associates.
Joe is survived by three beloved children, his daughter, Judi Kelly, two sons, James (Kim)Castiglia and John Castiglia all of Silver Creek; six cherished grandchildren, Kaine (Tracy) Kelly, Kristy (Mike) Wasik, James (Veronica) Castiglia, Karrissa Grubrer, Claire and Katie Castiglia; nine great grandchildren; also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends may call at the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave. Silver Creek on Monday December 30,2019 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, 165 Central Ave. Silver Creek at 10 AM.
