Obituary of Eugene R. Burgess
Eugene R. Burgess Sr., age 94, of Hanford Bay, Silver Creek, NY and Ham-burg, NY died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2014) in the Buffalo VA Medical Center.
He was born March 8, 1919, the son of the late Ralph and Lucy (Delaney) Burgess in Port Jervis, NY.
After graduating from Port Jervis High School in 1936, Eugene did post graduate studies in math and science before attending Alfred University on a track scholarship the following year. He set several track records at Alfred University. Article Photos

Interrupting his education, Gene joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 as a navigator in World War II. He married Jeannette L. Stephens on March 24, 1942 in Meridian, MS. After World War II, he finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946 and his Master's degree in Education in 1949. Gene entered active duty again in 1951 as a Captain with the Air Force in the Korean Conflict.
Following discharge, Gene began his teaching and guidance career. He worked as a counselor with the Veterans Administration in Buffalo, NY and then began teaching math and science in high schools.
He came to Silver Creek Central School in 1956. He taught math and science, then worked as a guidance counselor progressing to Director of Guidance be-fore retiring in 1983. During these years, he also worked with the NYS Education Dept. to develop the new guidance certification standards, coordinated the Articulation Seminars for high school students with SUNY Fredonia, developed the "Silverliner" newsletter for the guidance department, completed extensive studies at SUNY Buffalo, coached track and cross country teams and officiated track and field events throughout WNY.
He also formed the Northern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union for the Silver Creek and Forestville teachers and staff in 1969. Gene served as treasurer from 1970-83 and was a member of the Board of Directors for many years. Gene continued officiating track and field events with the WNY Track & Field Association for over 50 years.
Eugene was a lifetime member of the Chautauqua County Guidance Counselors Association, a member of the Blessed John Paul II Sr. Club and the WNY Track and Field Association. He was a former member of the Lambda Chi Fraternity and was an American Red Cross blood donor.
Eugene was passionate about sports, especially track and field events. An avid Buffalo Bills fan, he en-joyed college sports and NFL football. He also enjoyed music, theatre and financial investing. Being with his family was very important to him.
Survivors include his wife, Ursula (Hanusa) Burgess of Hamburg, NY whom he married June 5, 1993 in North Evans, NY; his sister, Muriel Spordone of Springhill, FL; his two sons, Stephen (Peggy) Burgess of Plano, Texas and Joseph (Sheila) Burgess of Cumberland, RI; three daughters, Ann (Gary) Conklin of Sayville, NY, Linda Burgess of James-town, NY and Julie (Paul) Sabrosky of Watertown, CT; daughter-in-law Carol Burgess of Westport, CT; extended family member, Roque da Cunha Ferreira of Lisbon, Portugal; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Rose (Michael) Pavolko of Hamburg, NY; three step-sons, Dr. Wolfgang Miggiani (Lori) Arlington, KS, Victor (Kien Tjay) Miggiani of Syracuse, NY, Christian Miggiani (Angelette) of Gilroy, CA; 14 step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Jeannette Stephens Burgess; a son, Eugene R. Burgess Jr.; and his brother, William Burgess.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed John Paul II Church, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., 2052 Lakeview Road, Lakeview, NY fol-lowed by a reception. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the spring.
