Obituary Mary Arlene Mason, 89, of Silver Creek, NY passed away Wednesday evening August 8, 2018 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. Arlene, to her family and friends, was born on November 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Franklin and Catherine (Martin Lafarr) Sontag. She graduated from Riverside High School in Buffalo, NY in 1947 and went to work in the offices of A&P until her marriage to Peter Jack Mason on April 15, 1950. The couple moved to Silver Creek and Arlene stayed home to raise the children. She went back to work in her later years in the cafeteria at Silver Creek Central and then as a cashier at Quality Markets. She also was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association for many years. Arlene was a devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Silver Creek. She was an avid gardener, an amazing cook, loved crossword puzzles and Jeopardy with Alex Trebek but one of her greatest qualities was her selfless devotion to her children. She lovingly raised five children and continued to be supportive and encouraging throughout their adult lives. Arlene loved her family but it was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she held closest to her heart. Arlene is survived by her children; Catherine Hilliker of Virginia Beach, VA, Cindy (David) Crino of Harleysville, PA, Paul (Jennifer) Mason of Silver Creek and Mary Lynn Mason of Columbia, MD along with her grandchildren; Jimmy, Christopher, Caitlin, Jason, Ted, Dave, Sam, Mary Margaret, Kayla, Michael and Tyler; her great-grandchildren Scarlett, Axl, Ava, Ben, Angela, David, Jay, James, Gianni, and Mason. She will also be greatly missed by her loving friend and caregiver, Ray Bernisky. In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her oldest son Peter John, her siblings, Patricia Thompson, Marilyn Bajak, Frank “Sonny” Sontag, Hank Sontag and several nieces and nephews.
